Efficient supervisor strategies

Developing new research talent is an important part of our jobs as scientists. This two-day course in PhD supervision will update you on the newest research in efficient supervisor strategies.

Be inspired by short workshops and exercises, presentations from experts and discussions with colleagues.

The course in PhD Supervision at Science and Technology is offered by the ST Learning Lab and the Graduate School of Science and Technology, Aarhus University.


The course content is very practice-oriented on e.g. discussion and testing of methods and tools in supervision.

There are three main subjects:

  1. Managing the process of supervision (e.g. aligning expectations, handling cultural differences, identifying factors that ensure academic development, managing crises and conflicts).
  2. Supervising the writing of thesis and papers (e.g. effective feedback).
  3. Communication skills (e.g. questioning techniques).

Learning outcomes

The course aims to expand participants' strategies and methods in supervision.

After the course, participants will:

  • understand rules and regulations for the PhD education as they appear in the ministerial order and GSST documents.
  • have tools to align expectations for supervision with his/her students.
  • have tools and strategies to develop students' skills and independence in writing.
  • understand methods of communication that ensure progression in supervisory meetings and enhance students' independent thinking.
  • be able to identify and manage conflicts and crises that may appear during a PhD education.


The course will be presented through short presentations, group exercises, and facilitated discussions. It runs over two consecutive days.

Day 1 covers all essential elements of PhD supervision and brings experienced and inexperienced supervisors up to date on developments and research within the area.

Day 2 provides focused training in key skills. Highly experienced supervisors may choose to participate in day one only.

All main supervisors and co-supervisors of PhD students at Science and Technology (permanent and temporary staff).
